DOT Physicals

NRCME We are proud to offer convenient, comprehensive DOT (CDL) physicals for commercial drivers licenses for Trenton, Jones County, New Bern, and the surrounding areas. Dr Jones has been certified through the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners since 2014, and works hard to stay up-to-date with any and all updates and changes in regards to requirements for CDL drivers. In most cases, we are able to schedule drivers the same day or next day. Most physicals last 30-45 minutes, and are happy to provide drivers with all the necessary forms.

Why Do I Need A Physical?

The DOT physical exam is considered a “Medical Fitness for Duty” exam for the demands of the job required of any commercial driver, not just the driver’s current job duties. The medical examiner’s role is to determine if a CMV driver’s health meets FMCSA standards.

What will the examiner do?

The examiner will check the following:

Vision-must read 20/40 or better with or without corrective lenses, in both eyes together as well as each eye individually. You also must be able to distinguish between red, green, and yellow.

Hearing-a forced whisper test will be done to detect sufficient hearing

Blood Pressure-blood pressure must be controlled under 140/90. Driver may control with prescription medication.

Diabetes-A urinalysis will be performed to rule out diabetes. Driver may control glucose with prescription medication. Please bring a copy of your most recent lab work showing your A1C. Drivers who control diabetes with insulin will be required to obtain a ITDM form prior to exam. Look for this form and more information about it under the Special Forms tab under CDL Physicals.

Medications-Driver should bring a list of any and all prescription medications to their appointment, as well as any OTC medications or supplements. At this time, use of controlled substances, such as narcotics or other habit forming drugs may be considered a disqualification.

CPAP-Drivers who sleep with a CPAP machine will need to bring a report from their machine showing there compliance. In order to show satisfactory compliance, the report must show that the driver has used their machine for 4 hours or more per night for 70% of the time over 30 days.

In addition, the medical examiner will do an exam to check heart, lungs, abdomen, and a neuromuscular exam.

To our drivers: we appreciate that you have chosen our office for your DOT physical. On that note, there may be times in which we ask for additional information, such as clearance from a surgeon or prescribing physician, CPAP reports, recent lab work, etc, before we can perform your physical. This information is vital for us to ensure we can safely perform your physical, and also for us to follow the rules and regulations set forth by the DMV and the FMCSA. These questions and our asking for this information are not to be complicated or difficult, but to ensure your safety, your family's safety, and the safety of other drivers on the roads and highways. We greatly and genuinely appreciate your cooperation and patience in obtaining this information for us.

Do I need an appointment?

We highly recommend an appointment to ensure we can see you in a timely manner. We are only able to take walk ins at this time if the schedule will allow. Just like you, we hate long waits at the doctors office. An appointment will help ensure you have as short a wait as possible! Exams usually take no more than 45 min, and we can usually schedule you the same day or the next. Call us at (252) 448-4561 to schedule your physical.

What do I need to bring?

We provide all paperwork here. The only thing you need to bring is you driver's license, lists of any medications, relevant medical documentation (e.g. CPAP report, latest lab results, EKGs, etc), and be sure to drink water before your appointment.

We are dedicated to providing ethical, comprehensive DOT CDL physicals and are proud to serve Trenton, Jones County, New Bern and the surrounding areas!
